Senior 3 Iyengar teacher Sheila Haswell treated us to a weekend of Intense and illuminating yoga, taught in her enthusiastic and practical style.
With 25 people on Saturday and 27 on Sunday the studio at Etiler was bursting at the seams.

Aidan Love has just passed his Junior Intermediate 1 assessment. This allows him to teach poses from a wider syllabus than before. In the Iyengar system teachers must pass Introductory levels 1 and 2 before they can teach the public, and then the assessments progress through Intermediate Junior levels 1,2 and 3 before journeying into Senior levels.
We are proud to have Aidan teaching the new syllabus in Istanbul.

B.K.S. Iyengar turns 93 years old on the 14th December. He will be celebrating his Birthday at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India.

Mr Iyengar continues his yoga journey unabated by age and is an inspiration to us all!

From our ‘Yoga for VAN’ collection we were able to collect 480TL – we thank all those who contributed for their generosity.
The money was added into a neighbourhood initiative, which altogether paid for sleeping bags and dry food boxes to be sent directly to the affected areas.
The picture shows the food boxes that were sent.

At Istanbul Yoga from Monday the 21st of November until the end of the week, we will be taking donations towards helping those affected by the VAN earthquake.
All of the proceeds will go to buying all-weather sleeping bags to help the homeless of Van cope with the freezing night temperatures.
The nearer we come to reality, the nearer we come to unity of heart. Sympathy, compassion, kindness are modes of this unity of heart, whereby we rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

There will be no classes during August – we will be back on the 31st.
Normal classes will resume in September – please check the website for details nearer the time.

So it is time to develop your home practice some more…
It can take time to get the confidence to start practicing so, with this in mind, we have prepared a couple of simple practice programs.
These are basic guides and can be used be changed to suit the amount of time you have or individual needs.
Here are some pointers for using these guides:
- Take care moving in and out of the asanas. Move slowly and with awareness.
- Take time to get into your ‘best’ pose and then hold for a few breaths allowing your awareness to circulate around the body.
- Make sure your breath stays calm and even throughout.
- If something hurts then try to work out how to lessen the pain, and if you can’t then carefully come out of the pose.
- If you have a regular Savangasana practice (shoulderstand) then this can be done as well as or instead of Viparita Karani
