B.K.S. Iyengar has been teaching and practicing yoga for over seventy years. He is one of the most influential and respected authorities on Yoga in the world today, and millions of people\u2019s lives have been positively affected by his methods.<\/p>\n

\nHe was born in 1918 in the village of Bellur in the Indian state of Karnataka. His early life was scarred by serious illness including malaria and tuberculosis. At the age of 15 he moved to the city of Mysore where he lived with his sister and her husband, the yogi Sri T. Krishnamacharya. This eccentric yoga teacher and Sanskrit scholar introduced Iyengar to yoga asana practice to improve his health.<\/p>\n

After only a few years Krishnamacharya sent him to Pune to teach. This really was a case of \u2018in at the deep end\u2019 and, with little theoretical knowledge and students who were initially more able than him, he embarked on a course of intense practice, often causing himself severe pain by doing things incorrectly. Through this trial and error approach he started to gain a profound understanding of the asanas. This was a time when, even in India, yoga was little understood or respected, and he struggled financially, surviving on only water, bread and yoga for long periods of time.<\/p>\n

In 1943 Iyengar married and started a family. It was his wife, Ramamani, who initially taught their children yoga. They were a devoted couple and, when he opened up his yoga centre in Pune in 1975, he named it after his recently departed wife.<\/p>\n

Gradually Iyengar\u2019s reputation as a teacher grew, and in 1952 he met the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who was to remain a pupil of his all his life. Menuhin was the one who first brought him to the west, arranging trips to Europe and bringing him in contact with a wide range of people and nationalities. His reputation grew and grew, but the event that particularly established him was the publication, and subsequent success, of his 1966 publication \u2018Light on Yoga\u2019. This continues to be probably the most important modern book on yoga. Iyengar is a prolific writer and has written many other important books on the subject<\/a>.<\/p>\n

BKS Iyengar\u00a0 passed away on 20.08.2014 in Pune, at the age of 95. His legacy continues through his daughter Geeta, his son Prashant, his granddaughter Abhijata and other experienced yogis who carry on his work. Iyengar Yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga in the world today.<\/p>\n

In 2004 Iyengar was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people.<\/p>\n

Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.<\/em>

O s\u0131ralarda teorik bilgisi \u00e7ok az olan Iyengar, \u00f6\u011frencilerin kendisinden daha iyi yoga yapabildiklerini g\u00f6zlemleyerek kendisini incitecek kadar yo\u011fun bir yoga prati\u011fine girdi ve hatta bir \u00e7ok pozu yanl\u0131\u015f yaparak kendi bedenini deney tahtas\u0131 gibi kulland\u0131. Ancak bu deneme yan\u0131lma d\u00f6neminde asanalar\u0131 detayl\u0131 ve derinlikle \u00f6\u011frenebildi. Bu deneyimlerin oldu\u011fu zamanlarda Hindistan\u2019da yoga hem anla\u015f\u0131lm\u0131yordu hemde \u00e7ok sayg\u0131n de\u011fildi. Menuhin Iyengar metodu ile tekrar keman \u00e7almaya ba\u015flad\u0131 ve \u00f6lene kadar da Iyengar\u2019\u0131n \u00f6\u011frencisi oldu. Menuhin, Iyengar\u2019\u0131n Bat\u0131 ile olan temas\u0131n\u0131 sa\u011flad\u0131, Avrupa\u2019ya d\u00fczenli e\u011fitim turlar\u0131 d\u00fczenleyerek Iyengar\u2019\u0131n bir \u00e7ok insanla tan\u0131\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131 ve \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131da sa\u011flad\u0131.
